Who we are

Winny Math is an online math tutoring team founded by Brett Caslick, a Queen's University student. Our tutors are university students who recently took the same Ontario math courses your child is in now, so they remember exactly where each unit gets hard and how to explain it plainly. Every lesson is live on a shared whiteboard, one-on-one or in a small group of two or three, and we work with families across Vaughan and the rest of Ontario.

How we help Vaughan students

Most Vaughan students attend schools in the York Region District School Board or the York Catholic District School Board, and both follow the Ontario math curriculum. We line each lesson up with the unit your child's teacher is covering: number sense and fractions in the early grades, the Grade 9 course (MTH1W) and the EQAO Grade 9 assessment, and the Grade 12 courses universities ask for (MHF4U, MCV4U and MDM4U), plus AP, IB and first-year university. A short diagnostic finds the exact point where math stopped making sense, and custom practice between sessions keeps it from slipping again. What we do

Everything happens online, by appointment, with evenings and weekends available, so a student in Maple, Woodbridge, Thornhill, Kleinburg or Concord gets the same tutor and the same lesson with nobody driving anywhere. Lessons are $40 per hour for solo lessons, or $25 per student per hour in a small group of two or three, with custom practice material included either way. How a lesson works for a Vaughan student

The first session is not a lecture. Your child's tutor runs a short diagnostic that looks at the unit they are in now and at the earlier skills that unit leans on. A Grade 7 student who keeps losing marks on integer word problems, for example, often turns out to be shaky on fraction operations from two years earlier. Finding that early saves weeks of frustration.

From there, lessons are planned around what the diagnostic showed. The tutor works on a shared online whiteboard, so every step is written out and your child can copy, question and redo it. York Region District and York Catholic: what the boards mean for math

Vaughan students attend either the York Region District School Board or the York Catholic District School Board. Both follow the same Ontario math curriculum, so a tutor does not need to learn a separate program for each. What changes is pacing, the order teachers take units in, and how tests are weighted. We plan around the unit outline and recent tests your child brings to the session, so the work lines up with what is happening in class that week.

Both boards also run International Baccalaureate options that draw Vaughan families. The public board's IB Diploma Programme is offered at Maple High School, and on the Catholic side Holy Cross Catholic Academy in Woodbridge is an authorized IB World School. Students at schools like these move quickly through Grade 10 and Grade 11 math before starting IB Mathematics. Math tutoring in Vaughan from Grade 1 to university prep

• Grades 1 to 5: place value, addition and subtraction strategies, multiplication facts, fractions and early coding expectations. Elementary tutoring is about building automatic skills and a calm attitude toward math.
• Grades 6 to 8: ratios, percentages, integers, linear patterns and the first real algebra. This is where gaps widen fastest, and middle school tutoring closes them before high school.

Why online works in a city built around the 400 and 407

Vaughan is spread out. Getting from Kleinburg to a tutoring centre in Concord, or from Thornhill Woods to a plaza in Woodbridge, can easily eat 30 minutes each way at rush hour on Rutherford Road or Highway 7. Add hockey, dance or a part-time job and a weekly in-person session becomes the first thing cancelled. Online sessions remove the drive entirely, which is usually what makes tutoring stick for a full term.
