What kids learn in Grades 7–8 math
- Fractions, decimals and percent, now used fluently and together, not one at a time.
- Integers, negative numbers and the rules for operating with them: a classic stumbling block.
- Ratios, rates and proportions, comparing quantities, scaling, and unit rates.
- The start of algebra, variables, expressions, and solving one- and two-step equations (pre-algebra).
- Geometry & measurement, angles, area, surface area and volume, and the Pythagorean theorem by Grade 8.
- Data, probability & financial literacy, interpreting data, basic probability, and real-world money math.
This is Ontario’s intermediate division, and it points straight at Grade 9: nearly everything here is assumed knowledge in MTH1W, the Grade 9 math course.
Why these years are a turning point
Up to Grade 6, math is mostly concrete, real quantities you can picture. In Grades 7–8 it becomes abstract: students manipulate symbols and negatives, follow multi-step procedures, and reason about relationships rather than just numbers. That shift is a genuine leap, and it’s the moment many kids first feel that effort isn’t translating into marks.
It’s also the last clear, lower-pressure window to repair foundations before high school. A fraction or integer gap that’s a few weeks’ work in Grade 8 becomes a much bigger problem once it collides with the pace of Grade 9.
The Grade 6 → 7 → 8 jump
Three things change at once: the math gets more abstract, the pace speeds up, and students are expected to work more independently, less step-by-step hand-holding, more “show your thinking.” Integers and early algebra are the usual places kids stumble, and homework habits matter more than they used to. None of it is a ceiling; it’s a set of very fixable gaps, caught at the right time.
Getting ready for high school math
Grade 8 flows directly into Grade 9 (MTH1W), and there’s a new reason to arrive ready: the EQAO Grade 9 math assessment now counts toward the course grade (between 10% and 30%). The best Grade 9 head start isn’t doing Grade 9 work early, it’s making sure fractions, integers and basic equation-solving are automatic, so the new material has somewhere solid to land.
