High School Math Tutoring in Ontario (Grades 9–12)

High school is where math marks start to carry real weight. The Grade 11 and 12 courses are the ones universities look at, the pace picks up, and the ideas turn abstract fast. A capable student can slip simply because one course moved faster than they did. This guide walks through the Ontario high school math path, what each course code actually demands, which ones programs want, and how focused tutoring turns a shaky semester around.

What changes in high school math

Two things shift at once. First, the content gets abstract: functions, proofs, calculus and vectors ask students to reason about ideas, not just run procedures. Second, the stakes rise: Grade 11 and 12 marks feed directly into university admission averages. A student who coasted through earlier grades on memory often hits a wall when understanding, not recall, becomes the test. The fix is rarely more hours of the same homework. It is finding the specific gap and rebuilding from there.

The Ontario high school math path

Most university-bound students move along this route: MTH1W (Grade 9), then MPM2D (Grade 10), then MCR3U (Grade 11 Functions), and finally the Grade 12 courses, MHF4U, MCV4U and MDM4U, chosen to match the programs a student is applying to. Each course assumes the one before it, which is exactly why a small gap in Grade 10 can feel like a cliff in Grade 12.

High school math, course by course

MPM2D: Grade 10 Principles of Mathematics

The Grade 10 academic course and the real gateway to the university-prep stream. It covers quadratics, analytic geometry and trigonometry, and it is where algebra stops being optional. Students who shore up MPM2D arrive in Grade 11 ready, rather than patching holes all year.

MCR3U: Grade 11 Functions

The course that introduces functions properly: quadratic, exponential and trigonometric functions, plus sequences and series. MCR3U is the backbone of every Grade 12 math course, so the marks and the understanding here matter twice, once for the Grade 11 average and again as the foundation for next year.

MHF4U: Grade 12 Advanced Functions

Polynomial, rational, logarithmic and trigonometric functions, taken to a deeper level. MHF4U is required or recommended for a wide range of university programs, and it is normally taken before MCV4U or alongside it, because calculus depends on these skills. It is one of the most common courses students come to us for.

MCV4U: Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors

Derivatives and their applications, plus vectors and three-dimensional geometry. MCV4U is the standard requirement for engineering, the physical sciences and many math-heavy programs. Because it moves quickly and leans on MHF4U, it rewards steady weekly support over last-minute cramming.

MDM4U: Grade 12 Data Management

Probability, statistics, and one and two-variable data analysis, finishing with a culminating project. MDM4U is the math of choice for business, social science and many health programs. It is often paired with MHF4U to keep university doors open.

Grade 9, MTH1W and EQAO

Grade 9 math is now the de-streamed MTH1W course, and the Grade 9 EQAO math assessment counts toward the course grade, so it is no longer a low-stakes practice run. Which Grade 12 math course do I need for university?

It depends on the program. Engineering and most sciences want MHF4U and MCV4U. Business and many social science and health programs want MHF4U and MDM4U. Always check the exact requirements for each program, since they vary.

Do I need MHF4U before MCV4U?

Effectively yes. MHF4U is normally taken before MCV4U or at the same time, because calculus leans heavily on the functions skills MHF4U builds. Taking them together is common but demanding.

My teen is failing Grade 11 functions partway through the semester. Can you still help?
