How much does math tutoring cost in Ontario? (2026 guide)

The short answer: private math tutoring in Ontario typically runs $40–$80 per hour, with a Toronto average around $56/hour. But "tutoring" covers everything from a free government service to a $4,000-a-year enrichment school, and the pricing models make comparison genuinely confusing. Here is every major option with real, sourced numbers — including ours. We're in this table, so read it knowing that, and check every source yourself.

Why the prices vary this much

Three things drive almost all of the spread:

Doing the per-hour math on monthly programs

Monthly prices sound comparable to hourly ones until you divide. A $379/month membership used twice a week is roughly $43/hour — reasonable. Used three times a month because life happened, it's $126/hour. Kumon's $170–$200/month per subject buys two short centre visits a week plus daily worksheets — a different product than an hour with a tutor, which is why we don't force a per-hour number on it. Before signing any membership, estimate your family's realistic attendance and divide.

Where we honestly fit

Winny Math is the cheapest paid option in the table because our tutors are high-achieving university students, not certified teachers, and we run online-only with no centres or franchise fees. What you give up: a teaching licence. What you keep: a tutor close enough to the material to remember what trips students up, the same tutor every week, a diagnostic and plan, and custom practice between sessions — the structure that monthly centres charge hundreds for. If your budget says "marketplace student tutor" but you want the program structure of a centre, that gap is exactly what we built for.

And if the answer for your family is "free": TVO Mathify is genuinely good — here's our honest take on when it's enough and when it isn't.

Rule of thumb: under ~$30/hour you're hiring a student; $40–$80 an experienced independent; $60–$100+ a certified teacher; monthly memberships only beat hourly if you attend every scheduled session.

Common questions

How much does a math tutor cost in Ontario?

Typically $40–$80 per hour, with a Toronto average around $56/hour. Marketplace tutors start around $15–$40/hour, boutique studios run about $85/hour, and franchise centres bill roughly $170–$700 per month depending on the program. Winny Math is $25/hour per student in small groups and $40/hour solo.

Is there free math tutoring in Ontario?

Yes — TVO Mathify, funded by the Ontario government, gives Grades 4–12 students free online help from Ontario Certified Teachers. It's drop-in with set hours and a different tutor each time. See our Mathify vs private tutor comparison.

Why is Winny Math cheaper than most options?

Student tutors instead of certified teachers, online-only, and no franchise overhead. That's the whole answer — we'd rather state it plainly than pretend there's a catch-free miracle.

Are monthly memberships better value than hourly?

Only at full attendance. Divide the monthly fee by the hours your family will realistically use, add any enrolment fees, and compare that per-hour number against $25–$80 hourly options.
