Getting Ready for Grade 8 Math

Eight tutor-led lessons that turn a shaky finish to Grade 7 into a confident, algebra-ready start to Grade 8.

Who it's for: Students finishing Grade 7 and heading into Grade 8 this September, in small tutor-led groups of four. Rebuilds Grade 7 number and fraction skills, then pushes further: integer multiplication and division, fully fluent fractions, and percent past 100% and under 1%. Two lessons protect algebra.

✓ Multiplies and divides integers as confidently as adding and subtracting them, and handles all four operations together in one expression without a sign error.✓ Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides fractions and mixed numbers fluently without a diagram, and moves between fraction, decimal, and percent form on sight.✓ Solves real ratio, rate, and percent problems, including discount-then-tax and percent increase or decrease, by identifying the right base first.✓ Translates a word phrase into an algebraic expression, collects like terms, adds binomials, evaluates by substitution, and solves one-step equations.✓ Calculates the circumference and area of a circle and applies those formulas in composite 2D shapes and simple volumes, and reads data with probability.

The 8-lesson plan

Slides are what your tutor works from in the live lesson. The practice module is homework: do it before the next lesson.

1

Integers: Mastering All Four Operations

Extend Grade 7's integer addition and subtraction into confident multiplication and division, then combine all four operations in one expression.

2

Ratios, Rates & Proportional Reasoning

Compare ratios and rates, solve for a missing value in a proportion, and tell proportional situations apart from ones that only look proportional.

3

Percent Toolkit: Beyond 100 and Below 1

Move fluently between fraction, decimal, and percent form including values over 100% and under 1%, then apply percent-of-a-number forward and in reverse to real problems.

4

Fractions: All Four Operations, Fully Fluent

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and mixed numbers by direct computation, dropping the visual tools Grade 7 used and building true numeric fluency.

5

From Patterns to Algebra: Expressions, Like Terms & Substitution

Translate words into algebraic expressions, collect like terms and add binomials, and evaluate expressions by substituting integers and fractions -- the pivot lesson where algebra begins.

6

One-Step Equations: Solving and Verifying

Build the foundational equation-solving habit: isolate the variable with the correct inverse operation, including fraction coefficients, and check by substitution.

7

Circle Measurement: Circumference, Area & Composite Figures

Calculate the circumference and area of a circle, apply those formulas inside composite 2D shapes, and extend circle area into the volume of a cylinder.

8

Data Analysis: Central Tendency, Graphs & Probability

Calculate mean, median, mode, and range and explain how new data shifts them, read and critique graphs, and apply probability using a tree diagram for compound events.
