Getting Ready for Grade 6 Math

Eight tutor-led lessons that build real number, algebra, and geometry fluency - integers, fractions, percent, and the coordinate plane - before September.

Who it's for: Students finishing Grade 5 and heading into Grade 6 this September, in small tutor-led groups of four. Bridges the jump: numbers to one million, integers appear, fractions gain unlike-denominator operations, decimals reach thousandths, algebra and the four-quadrant coordinate plane begin.

✓ Reads, writes, compares, orders, and rounds whole numbers to one million and decimals to thousandths, and applies the divisibility rules for 2 through 10.✓ Plots and compares integers on horizontal and vertical number lines, placing negative numbers next to decimals and fractions in real contexts like temperature.✓ Adds and subtracts fractions with unlike denominators, multiplies and divides a whole number by a proper fraction, and calculates a percent mentally, fast.✓ Extends a linear growing pattern into a table, graph, and algebraic expression, evaluates expressions with decimals, and solves a multi-term equation.✓ Plots and transforms shapes in all four quadrants, measures angles up to 360 degrees, solves for unknown angles, and finds surface area from a net.

The 8-lesson plan

Slides are what your tutor works from in the live lesson. The practice module is homework: do it before the next lesson.

1

Place Value to One Million, Multiplication, Division & Divisibility Rules

Extend place value fluency from 100 000 to one million, refresh multiplication and division, and learn the divisibility rules for 2 through 10 as a new mental-math toolkit.

2

Meet the Integers: Negative Numbers, Number Lines & Comparing Rational Numbers

Represent integers on horizontal and vertical number lines using real contexts like temperature and elevation, and compare and order integers alongside decimals and fractions.

3

Fractions Grow Up Again: Unlike Denominators, Multiplying & Dividing by Whole Numbers

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators and multiply and divide a whole number by a proper fraction, using fraction-bar and sharing pictures throughout.

4

Decimals to Thousandths: Comparing, Rounding, Multiplying & Dividing

Read, compare, round, multiply, and divide decimal numbers to thousandths, including a first look at repeating decimals.

5

Ratios, Rates & Percent in Real Life

Simplify ratios, calculate rates, and use fast mental-math strategies to find a percent of a number in real-world contexts.

6

Patterns to Algebra: Linear Expressions, Monomials & Multi-Term Equations

Turn a linear growing pattern into a table, graph, and algebraic expression, add monomials, evaluate expressions, and solve and verify a multi-term equation.

7

The Coordinate Plane, Transformations & Angle Relationships

Plot and transform shapes across all four quadrants of the coordinate plane, measure angles up to 360 degrees, and solve for unknown angles using angle relationships.

8

Area, Nets & Surface Area: From Trapezoids to 3D Shapes

Decompose composite shapes including trapezoids, rhombuses, and kites into known pieces, then build nets to calculate the surface area of prisms and pyramids.
