Getting Ready for Grade 5 Math

Eight tutor-led lessons that build real number, fraction, algebra, geometry, and data fluency before the first bell rings in September.

Who it's for: Students finishing Grade 4 and heading into Grade 5 this September, in small tutor-led groups of four. Bridges the jump: numbers to 100 000, times tables to 12x12 with long division, fractions gain mixed numbers, percent appears, patterning becomes algebra, and data adds stacked-bar graphs.

✓ Reads, writes, compares, orders, and rounds whole numbers to 100 000 and decimals to hundredths, and applies the same base-ten shift to convert metric units.✓ Multiplies two-digit by two-digit numbers and divides three-digit by two-digit numbers using the area model, backed by instant recall of facts to 12x12.✓ Names, compares, and orders equivalent fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers to twelfths, and moves between fraction, decimal, and percent form.✓ Translates a word phrase or a growing or shrinking pattern into an algebraic expression, evaluates it, and solves and verifies an equation or simple inequality.✓ Constructs and compares triangles, plots and transforms shapes on a coordinate grid including rotations, and finds the area of a parallelogram or triangle.

The 8-lesson plan

Slides are what your tutor works from in the live lesson. The practice module is homework: do it before the next lesson.

1

Bigger Numbers, Smaller Places: Place Value to 100 000 and Decimals to Hundredths

Read, write, compare, order, and round whole numbers to 100 000 and decimal numbers to hundredths, then apply the same base-ten shift pattern to convert between metric units.

2

Multiplication Levels Up: Facts to 12x12 and Two-Digit by Two-Digit Multiplication

Build instant recall of multiplication facts through 12x12 and multiply two-digit by two-digit numbers confidently using the area model and the standard algorithm side by side.

3

Division Grows Up: Three-Digit by Two-Digit Division with the Area Model

Divide a three-digit number by a two-digit number confidently using the area model (partial quotients), interpreting a remainder correctly in context.

4

Fractions Grow Up: Equivalent Fractions, Mixed Numbers, and Comparing to Twelfths

Find equivalent fractions, convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and compare and order fractions from halves through twelfths using fraction strips and number lines.

5

Fractions at Work: Adding, Subtracting, and Meeting Percent

Add and subtract fractions with like denominators, multiply and divide a whole number by a unit fraction, and meet percent by connecting fraction, decimal, and percent forms.

6

Patterns to Algebra: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities

Extend growing and shrinking patterns using tables and graphs, translate a word phrase into an algebraic expression, evaluate it, and solve and verify an equation.

7

Triangles, Transformations, and the Coordinate Plane

Construct and classify triangles using a protractor, decide whether two shapes are congruent, and plot, translate, reflect, and rotate a shape on a coordinate grid with different scales.

8

Graphs, Probability, and Real-World Money

Read and build stacked-bar graphs, spot a misleading graph, find the mean and median of a data set, express probability as a fraction, and calculate unit rate and sales tax.
