Getting Ready for Grade 3 Math

Eight playful, hands-on lessons with blocks, coins, and clocks that turn a rising Grade 3 student into a confident one before the first bell rings in September.

Who it's for: Students finishing Grade 2 and heading into Grade 3 this September, in small tutor-led groups of four, learning with blocks, coins, and fraction strips, not worksheets. Bridges Grade 2 to Grade 3: numbers to 1000, a full regrouping algorithm, times tables begin, and perimeter and area join in.

✓ Reads, writes, compares, orders, and rounds whole numbers up to 1000 using base ten blocks and a hundred chart, not just by memorizing digits.✓ Adds and subtracts numbers up to 1000 using the regrouping (carrying and borrowing) algorithm, including across a zero, and checks with a mental estimate first.✓ Knows the 2s, 5s, and 10s multiplication facts and their matching division facts by heart, built from arrays and equal groups the student can see and touch.✓ Names equal parts of a whole across halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths, and tenths, and finds equivalent fractions with fraction strips.✓ Counts mixed coins and bills to a target and makes correct change, tells time to the minute, measures perimeter and area with grid units, and reads a graph.

Bigger Numbers, Bigger Blocks: Place Value and Numbers to 1000

Build, read, write, compare, order, and round three-digit numbers using base ten blocks and a hundred chart, the number-sense foundation every later lesson leans on.

Adding and Subtracting Big Numbers: Regrouping to 1000

Add and subtract three-digit numbers using base ten blocks to trade and regroup, then move to the paper algorithm, checking every answer with a quick mental estimate.

Equal Groups and Arrays: Multiplication and Division Facts (2s, 5s, and 10s)

Build multiplication as equal groups and arrays and division as sharing or grouping, then build fast recall of the 2, 5, and 10 times tables and their matching division facts.

Fraction Friends: Equal Parts, Equivalent Fractions, and Fair Sharing

Name and shade equal parts of a whole, find simple equivalent fractions with fraction strips, and solve fair-share problems with up to 20 items among several friends.

Money and the Clock: Counting Change and Telling Time to the Minute

Count mixed coins and bills to make a target amount, make correct change for a purchase, and read an analog and digital clock to the minute, including simple elapsed-time problems.

Measuring Our World: Length, Perimeter, and Area

Measure length in millimetres, centimetres, metres, and kilometres with real tools, find perimeter by adding sides, and find area by counting square units.

Exploring 3D Shapes: Faces, Edges, Vertices, and Following Directions

Sort and build cubes, prisms, pyramids, cylinders, and cones by counting faces, edges, and vertices, and follow multistep directions including quarter and half turns.

Graphs, Averages, and Chance: Data and Probability

Read and build pictographs and bar graphs with scales bigger than one, find the mean and mode of a small data set, and use likelihood words from impossible to certain.
