If you cut a rectangle in half along a line connecting the midpoints of its two longer sides, what two shapes do you get?

Two smaller rectangles - the cut runs parallel to the shorter sides, splitting the rectangle into two matching rectangular halves.

A square with area 16 units² is cut into 4 identical smaller squares, and then those 4 smaller squares are each cut in half diagonally to make 8 triangles. If all 8 triangles are rearranged into one long row, what is the total area of the row, and how do you know?
