Last semester a family called me because their daughter, I will call her Maya, had gone from comfortable B’s in middle school to staring at a 42% on her Grade 10 academic midterm here in Toronto. She was in full crisis mode.
In our first session she was completely shut down, this big wall up. She kept saying, “I just don’t get quadratics, Brett. Parabolas make no sense.” She could barely say the word parabola without getting visibly anxious. But the moment we started working a problem, I saw it: she was not failing because of the new Grade 10 material. She was failing because she could not confidently add a positive and a negative number without reaching for a calculator.
So we did something that terrified her parents. We paused the Grade 10 curriculum completely. For two weeks we went back to Grade 7 and 8 fundamentals: integers, the rules for fractions, basic distribution. Week to week you could literally watch the tension leave her shoulders. By the time we brought it back to her actual homework, she realised a quadratic is just a stack of simple operations she now owned. The high-level concept clicked almost instantly. She finished the term at 78%.
Why it happens: math is a skyscraper
Here is the part most people miss. Math is not like history or English. If your child never fully grasps the War of 1812, they can still understand the First World War just fine. Math does not work that way. Math is a skyscraper. Every floor rests on the one below it.
So when a child struggles in Grade 10, it is almost never a Grade 10 problem. It is a Grade 7 or 8 foundational brick that cracked, and now that the building has gotten taller, the whole structure starts to sway. That is not a lack of intelligence. It is a lagging gap. The mistake almost every parent makes
When a parent sees a bad report card, they look at the current chapter, trigonometry, or factoring, or whatever it is, and they think, “My kid just isn’t wired for this advanced stuff.” It is a completely natural conclusion, and it is almost always wrong. The current chapter is where the pain shows up. It is not where the problem started. Chasing the symptom, re-teaching this week’s lesson louder and louder, rarely works, because the real gap is a few floors down.
How I find and fix the real cause
My process is less like a lecture and more like detective work. It breaks into four steps.
- The forensic audit. I do not use generic multiple-choice diagnostics. They are useless. I sit with the student, have them solve a problem out loud, and I watch the pencil. The exact moment it hovers or shakes is where the gap is.
- Isolate the bug. It is like debugging code. If a student trips on a complex equation, I strip away the scary Grade 10 framing and test the core skill on its own. Is it a negative sign? A fraction flip? I find the one operation that is actually breaking.
- The low-stakes rebuild. Once we have found the gap, say dividing fractions, we practise it entirely outside their schoolwork. No grades, no pressure, just rebuilding the muscle memory until it is automatic.
- The bridge. Then we connect it back. I show them, “Look, this exact fraction rule we just mastered is 80% of that scary exam question next week.” The moment they see the connection, their confidence skyrockets.

The real tragedy is how this usually gets handled. Schools are on a relentless timeline. The teacher has to cover the curriculum before the exam, so the train leaves the station whether your child is on it or not. It is no one’s fault, it is just the structure.
And a lot of traditional tutoring is worse: a band-aid. A tutor shows up the night before a test, looks at tonight’s homework sheet, and walks the student through the answers so they can scrape a passing grade tomorrow. That is treating the symptom, not the disease. If a tutor just helps your kid finish tonight’s homework, they are not tutoring, they are being a human answer key. The moment they leave the room, the student is just as lost as before.
What you can do at home this week
You do not need to be a math expert to help. You need to change what you are looking for.
- Ask your child to talk you through one problem out loud. Do not correct, just listen for where they slow down or guess. That spot is the clue.
- When they get stuck, resist the urge to give the answer. Ask, “what is the very first step here?” and see how far back the uncertainty goes.
- Trade one long, tearful homework battle for fifteen calm minutes of an easier, earlier skill. Confidence is built on small wins, not big struggles.
- Tell the teacher what you are seeing and ask which specific unit slipped. They usually know.

My child suddenly dropped in Grade 10. Is it the new material?
Almost never. A sharp drop in Grade 10 is usually a Grade 7 or 8 foundation, like integers or fractions, that never fully locked in. The new material only exposed the old gap. Find and rebuild that gap and the current grade tends to recover on its own.
Should we pause the current curriculum to go back and fill gaps?
Often yes, briefly. Spending two or three weeks rebuilding the missing foundation feels like falling behind, but it is faster than pushing forward on a cracked base. Once the basics are automatic, the harder material clicks much more quickly.
Is struggling in math a sign my child is not smart enough?
No. In years of tutoring I have almost never met a child who could not do math. What looks like a lack of ability is almost always a lagging gap, a single foundational skill from a few grades down that needs shoring up.
